Checkr Review (2026)From $29.99 a Report Plus Court Fees

By · Researched and written with an AI assistant · who does what

The headline per-check price is rarely what you actually pay — passthrough fees vary wildly by county and search type, so budget for the effective cost, not the advertised one. It's overkill unless you hire at real volume.

Best for

companies hiring hourly or gig workers at volume that need fast, API-driven, compliant background checks.

Skip it if

you hire only a handful of people a year — a one-off check from a simpler provider costs less hassle than onboarding a screening platform.

Pricing (2026)

✓ Pricing re-verified 30 Sep 2026

Pay-as-you-go per report, no subscription: Basic $29.99, Essential $59.99 and Complete $94.99 per report, with Enterprise quote-only. Tenant screening is priced separately at $24.99, $34.99 and $44.99 per report, and personal checks start from $49.99. Add-ons stack on top: MVR report $9.50 per check, identity verification $4.99 per check, and employment verification from $12.50 a check for the current employer, rising to $15, $25, $35 and $50 for three, five, seven and ten years back, with third-party court and database fees passed through at cost.

The $59.95 (employment) and $64.95 (income and employment) figures on the same page belong to Checkr's separate pay-as-you-go verification product for mortgage lending, billed per verification with no commitment or contract, not to the hiring add-ons. What the price did

We capture Checkr’s own pricing page every month and keep the figures, so this is our record of the page — not a forecast, and not someone else’s summary.

Checkr's price card is one of the most stable we track. The July and August 2026 captures are byte-for-byte identical: $29.99, $59.99 and $94.99 per report, the same tenant tiers at $24.99, $34.99 and $44.99, and the same $9.50 MVR and $4.99 identity checks. Re-reading the page on 17 August 2026 returned exactly the same figures. Three readings, no movement. Re-read again on 30 September 2026: the three packages, the three tenant tiers, the $9.50 MVR and the $4.99 identity check all unchanged.

What buyers report about Checkr

Hands-on: not tested by usReported by buyers: Trustpilot, BBB, ComplaintsBoard and TrustRadius, read August 2026

Themes from the buyer-review sites listed at the foot of this page, read in August 2026. We have not run Checkr ourselves, so this is other buyers' experience rather than ours. We summarise it here because the complaints are usually the part a vendor page leaves out.

What they praise
  • • Fast and heavily automated, which is why gig platforms and high-volume employers use it. A+ rating with the BBB.
  • • For straightforward checks at volume, reviewers report it does the job without friction.
  • • The employer's view, which the consumer platforms never show: TrustRadius reviewers run Checkr inside their ATS so a check fires automatically when a candidate accepts an offer, and a recruiter hiring 50-plus people per site names bulk launch and tracking as the reason they stay.
What they complain about
  • • Report errors are frequent enough that past class actions over file accuracy ran to multi-million dollar settlements. Verify anything flagged before you act on it — that is a legal exposure, not just an inconvenience.
  • • Disputes and corrections take a long time. Candidates report pending status stretching for months, with one account describing a 5-month delay.
  • • Support is chatbot-first, and reviewers describe being unable to reach a person while a dispute is open.
  • • 4.1 out of 5 across 998 Trustpilot reviews (read 25 August 2026).
  • • Two operational gaps named by HR buyers in 2025: edge cases such as international checks or roles needing a specific verification are not flagged early, so the process quietly stalls; and there is no way to nudge a candidate who has not completed their part.
  • • One reviewer's whole verdict is the title — it gets the job done but could be more cost efficient — which is the same conclusion the per-report arithmetic reaches once add-ons are counted.

Where the ratings disagree. This is the sharpest platform split in our set, and it is structural rather than a quality dispute: Trustpilot, the BBB and ComplaintsBoard collect candidates disputing what a report said about them, while TrustRadius collects the HR teams who buy the product. Both are real. If you are the buyer, read TrustRadius for whether it works and the consumer sites for what your candidates will experience when something is wrong.

When the paid plan is worth it

Checkr charges per report, not per seat, so "premium" means moving up a package rather than unlocking a dashboard. Basic at $29.99 buys an SSN trace, sex offender registry, global watchlist and a national criminal search — a database sweep, not a courthouse one. Essential at $59.99 adds identity verification and unlimited county criminal search, and county records are where actual convictions sit; that is the step that changes what you learn, not the one above it.

Complete at $94.99 adds unlimited state criminal search plus a federal criminal search, which earns its keep for roles touching finance, federal contracts or interstate work and is otherwise redundant. Enterprise is quote-only and gates automated adjudication, 200+ ATS integrations and custom workflows — worth it once a human reviewing every report is the bottleneck rather than the check itself. What upgrading never fixes: third-party court and database access fees are passed through at cost on every tier, so the package price is a floor and not an invoice.

And Checkr states it does not make the hiring determination on the customer's behalf. Individualized assessment and adverse action remain your legal work at every price point.

We checked this price twice

Our monthly capture read this vendor's pricing page in July 2026 and again in August 2026, and the amounts were the same both times. We keep watching — the registry records what moves.

How to actually use Checkr

Nothing runs until Checkr credentials the account. Dashboard and API access require establishing permissible purpose through an Account Executive, backed by legal business name, EIN, state of incorporation and articles of incorporation. That gate, not the integration work, is where timelines usually slip, and Checkr publishes no duration for it. Developers then request a staging account by form — Checkr documents that new staging accounts are typically created within 1-2 business days — and pull secret and publishable keys from Account Settings, Developer Settings.

Staging is deliberately partial: post adverse action, invoices and analytics are unavailable, and mocked reports finish in minutes rather than realistically. First live value comes from an invitation carrying candidate ID, package name and work location, with the candidate supplying SSN and zip code for criminal packages, or driver license number and state for motor vehicle records. Invitations stay valid for 7 days with a follow-up notice every 24 hours. Checkr documents webhooks as the recommended way to receive report status.

Distilled from Checkr developer documentation, getting-started and credentialing sections: https://docs.checkr.com/ and https://docs.checkr.com/#section/Getting-started (both read 2026-07-31). Package and add-on gating cross-checked against the vendor pricing page: https://checkr.com/pricing (read 2026-07-31). Pricing re-read 30 September 2026 on checkr.com/pricing (packages, tenant screening, the full add-on list and the separate mortgage verification section); checkr.com/llms.txt returns a 404.

The natural comparison is GoodHire or Sterling — other background-check providers.

Frequently asked questions

What does a background check cost with Checkr?

$29.99 for Basic, $59.99 for Essential and $94.99 for Complete, per report, with no subscription. Those three figures were identical in our July and August 2026 captures and again on 17 August 2026, so a budget built on them holds.

What pushes the price above the headline?

The add-ons, which are billed per check rather than bundled: a motor vehicle record is $9.50 and identity verification $4.99, while employment verification starts at $12.50 for the current employer and rises to $15, $25, $35 and $50 for three, five, seven and ten years back (read 30 September 2026). An Essential report with a five-year employment check is therefore $84.99 before the court and database pass-through fees Checkr adds at cost. Do not confuse these with the $59.95 and $64.95 on the same page, which price Checkr's separate income and employment verification product for mortgage lending.

Is tenant screening the same product?

No, it is priced separately and lower: $24.99, $34.99 and $44.99 per report for Starter, Essential and Complete tenant screening, aimed at landlords. Personal checks, where you run a check on yourself or someone you know, start from $49.99. Make sure you are comparing the employment product with an employment product.
