The free tier is deliberately narrow: 125 words per paraphrase and two of the modes. Throughout this review we weigh it against Grammarly.
students, non-native writers and anyone who wants quick paraphrasing, grammar and summarizing help.
you already use a general AI assistant that paraphrases and edits — QuillBot may be redundant.

A free account, used on QuillBot's AI Detector, AI Humanizer and Paraphraser. We ran the detector over the texts of known authorship we used for our Pangram test the same day: three passages from public-domain books, a paragraph one of us typed for the test, three paragraphs a language model wrote for our own reviews, and one Claude wrote on the spot. We added a control paragraph written in stock chatbot phrasing, sent it through the Humanizer, and checked the rewrite in QuillBot's detector and in Pangram.

Read in a browser on quillbot.com/premium from a US exit (New York) on 8 September 2026, with the annual toggle operated in both positions; an EU read on 7 September showed the same figures in euros. Free at $0 (paraphrase up to 125 words in 2 modes, humanizer up to 125 words and 6 uses a day, summaries to 1,200 words). Premium is $19.95 a month month-to-month, or $8.33 a month billed annually ($99.95 a year), which the page presents as 58% off.
The 40%-off promotion that showed $5.00 and ran to 6 September 2026 has ended. A Team plan exists but carries no public price; it routes to an enquiry. The old /pricing URL still returns 404, and /upgrade shows a sign-up wall when signed out. Re-read 26 September 2026 in a browser from a Netherlands exit with the toggle operated in both positions: EUR 19.95 a month month-to-month and EUR 8.33 a month billed annually, still labelled 58% off; Team still routes to an enquiry. Category context: Operations & Workflow. Across the 53 tools in this category that we researched with a public US-dollar price, the median entry price is $29 a month (lowest paid plan as listed, per seat where the vendor prices per seat). QuillBot’s entry price of $19.95 a month sits below that median. Compare pricing conditions in the Software Cost Atlas →
The honest framing is that this is a box of writing utilities -- paraphraser, grammar, plagiarism, AI detection -- rather than somewhere you actually write. General AI chat tools now overlap much of it. And treat the free AI detector as weak: in our test of 1 October 2026 it rated four plainly written machine texts 100% human and only caught a paragraph full of stock chatbot phrases. Note the sticker too: the advertised €8.33 a month assumes you pay for the year, and month-to-month is €19.95, about 2.4 times as much.

Hands-on: tested 2026-10-01Reported by buyers: Trustpilot, Capterra and Research, read August 2026
Themes from the buyer-review sites listed at the foot of this page, read in August 2026. We tested QuillBot ourselves on 2026-10-01, but one test is a narrow sample, so here is what other buyers report. We summarise it here because the complaints are usually the part a vendor page leaves out.
Pages read (August 2026): Trustpilot
There are two real prices, and the gap between them is the decision. Read on quillbot.com/premium from the EU on 7 September 2026 and re-read unchanged on 26 September: Premium is €19.95 a month if you pay monthly, or €8.33 a month if you pay for the year. That is 2.4 times, and the page itself labels the annual route 58% off. So a monthly plan does exist -- it is simply priced to push you onto the annual one.
Team is an enquiry rather than a published price. That changes the shape of the decision rather than removing it. Over twelve months the annual route is €99.96 and the monthly route €239.40, so the right to leave costs about €139 a year. You are weighing that against a twelve-month commitment to a category moving underneath you: general AI chat tools now overlap most of what QuillBot does, and twelve months is exactly the period over which that overlap has been widening.
Judge the free tier on what it is, which is a demo rather than a smaller version of the product. Paraphrasing is capped at 125 words and two modes. A typical paragraph runs 100 to 150 words, so the free plan handles roughly one paragraph at a time -- a 1,000-word article is eight separate passes. That is enough to see whether the output reads well and nowhere near enough to do a day's work, which is precisely the design.
What you are buying is honest enough on its own terms: a box of writing utilities -- paraphraser, grammar checker, plagiarism check, AI detection -- rather than a place you actually write. If those four are jobs you do repeatedly, €100 for a year is a fair price for a tool that does them properly. What upgrading does not fix is the shape of the product: Premium removes the word caps, not the fact that this is a utility belt rather than a writing environment. If you are hoping to replace a writing workflow, no tier here is that.
The first findings are at the top of this page. The rest:
Most of our reviews are researched rather than run — how we review explains which is which, and why we do not pretend otherwise.
Run the free tier against the hardest thing you have, not the easiest. The cap is 125 words per paraphrase and two modes, so pick one dense paragraph -- jargon, a long sentence, something you would genuinely struggle to rewrite -- and see whether the output is better than your own second draft. That is the whole test. Do the same with the other three utilities while you are there: run the grammar checker over something you have already proofread, the plagiarism check over a piece you know the sources of, and the AI detector over text you wrote yourself.
Each one tells you more about the tool's false-positive rate than any review will. Then decide with the real price in front of you. Premium is €19.95 a month month-to-month or €8.33 a month billed annually -- about €139 more over a year to keep the right to cancel. Since the free tier does not expire, take the monthly plan for one working month first if you are unsure; waiting costs you nothing except the paraphrases you do a paragraph at a time.
quillbot.com/premium read in a browser from a Netherlands exit on 7 September 2026, with the 'Pay annually' toggle operated in both positions -- the page renders client-side and returns 403 to a plain HTTP request, so the amounts only exist in a real browser. Taken from it: the €0 free tier with its 125-word paraphrase, two modes and 6-uses-a-day humanizer caps; the €19.95 month-to-month Premium rate; the €8.33 annual rate the page itself labels 58% off; the Team plan's enquiry-only routing; and the full Free-versus-Premium comparison table (paraphrase modes and languages, the 25,000-words-a-month plagiarism allowance, 1,200- against 6,000-word summaries).
quillbot.com/pricing still returns 404 and quillbot.com/upgrade renders an empty page when signed out. Re-read 26 September 2026 in the browser pane from a Netherlands exit, with the 'Pay annually' switch clicked into both positions: EUR 8.33 a month billed annually and EUR 19.95 a month billed monthly, the free tier's 125-word paraphrase and two modes, and the comparison rows (plagiarism check 25,000 words a month on Premium, summaries 1,200 against 6,000 words, Quillbot Flow storage 10 MB against 100 MB) unchanged.
The FAQ answers opened the same day are the source of the buyer questions: the 14-day money-back guarantee (new users, no earlier refund, request within 14 days of being charged, refusable for shared accounts or abuse), pausing from the Account page without being billed, use on all your devices with at most 10 at a time, and a volume discount on a single invoice from 5 members. quillbot.com/llms.txt returns 403 to a plain request.
The natural comparison is Grammarly or a general AI assistant — broader writing tools. Weigh it against Grammarly on the job you actually need done.
Within 14 days, with conditions. The FAQ on quillbot.com/premium (read 26 September 2026) offers a 14-day money-back guarantee if you are a new user, have not had a refund from QuillBot before, and ask within 14 days of being charged; it reserves the right to refuse in cases of suspected fraud, shared accounts or abuse. On the annual plan, EUR 99.96 up front, that fortnight is the only exit, so test the paraphraser on real work in the first days rather than the last.
Yes. The same FAQ says that if you will not use Premium for a while you can pause it from your Account page and you are not billed for that time, with no need to cancel. That matters most on the monthly plan at EUR 19.95: a student who writes in term time can pause over the summer rather than paying for months without essays, which narrows the gap with the EUR 8.33 annual rate.
On your own devices, yes: the FAQ allows Premium on all of them, but on no more than 10 at a time. Sharing one account across people is a different matter - shared accounts are one of the grounds on which QuillBot says it can refuse the money-back guarantee. For a group, the FAQ offers a volume discount on a single invoice from 5 members, and the Team plan carries no public price; it routes to an enquiry (read 26 September 2026).
